This is my contribution for the John Held Jr tribute. For more information visit the Illostribute website created by Toby Neighbors. John Held Jr. was one of the most famous lead illustrators for the most popular magazines at the 1920's. He illustrated for Life, Judge, and New Yorker. His style was so distinct that it defined the jazzy 1920's era in a indistinguishable way know as Flapper era. I like how intense and provocative his poses are and how bold he is with his usage of line and silhouette. In my piece I tried to evoke the intensity of his paintings focusing on the silhouette and poses of the characters.
Below is a great painting from John Held Jr.
The intensity of the poses really support the intensity of the situation evoking the nostalgia of the jazz era.
